Description
Product Overview
The Triconex 8120E is the primary 19-inch rack chassis for Tricon triple modular redundant (TMR) safety instrumented systems (SIS). It provides backplane TriBus communication, power distribution and mechanical mounting for Tricon processor modules, I/O cards, communication boards and redundant power supplies. Designed for fault-tolerant emergency shutdown (ESD), fire & gas (F&G), turbine protection and critical safety interlock systems, this chassis supports simplex, dual and triple redundant configurations for high-risk industrial processes.

Key Features
- TMR backplane architecture, with three independent parallel voting paths for fault tolerant operation
- 16 plug-in card slots to host Tricon CPU, analog/digital I/O, relay and communication modules
- Dual redundant power supply slots to eliminate single point of power failure
- Hot-swap support for individual I/O and processor modules without rack shutdown
- Built-in TriBus high-speed backplane for synchronous voting between the three TMR control lanes
- Integrated module status LED indicators for each card slot
- Conformal coated backplane option available for high humidity / corrosive plant environments
- Supports event sequence recording, trip data capture and online system diagnostics
- Certified for SIL3 safety applications in oil & gas, refinery, chemical and power generation
Application
Deployed in safety instrumented systems for refineries, natural gas plants, petrochemical complexes and thermal power stations. The 8120E chassis forms the core of ESD, F&G and turbine protection racks, hosting the Tricon TMR controller and all associated safety I/O modules for emergency process shutdown.
Installation & Maintenance Notes
- ESD protection is mandatory before handling backplane or inserting/removing modules
- Maintain adequate cabinet ventilation; avoid stacking heat-generating equipment directly adjacent
- Install dual redundant 24VDC power feeds to the rack for maximum fault tolerance
- Check backplane connector pins for oxidation or damage before installing replacement cards
- Complete full system proof test after chassis swap or major module replacement
- Separate safety TriBus wiring from non-safety DCS and low-level analog instrument cables
- Back up the Tricon control database before any rack or backplane maintenance work
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between 8120 and 8120E? A: The 8120E is the enhanced revision of the original 8120 chassis, with improved backplane circuit noise immunity and extended temperature rating.
Q: Can I mix old and new series Tricon modules inside the 8120E rack? A: Most Tricon classic series I/O and CPU modules are compatible, but firmware version matching is required before commissioning.
Q: Does the 8120E include CPU and I/O cards? A: No. 8120E is only the empty rack chassis and backplane; processors, I/O modules and power supplies are sold separately.
