Description

The Triconex 4201-3 is a Remote Extender Module (RXM) designed for the Tricon triple modular redundant (TMR) safety instrumented system (SIS), manufactured by Triconex (Schneider Electric). It delivers long-distance fiber-optic communication between the main Tricon controller chassis and remote I/O racks, extending safety control signals across plant areas while preserving the TMR fault-tolerant architecture. This unit is the remote-site variant of the 4200 series RXM family and uses multi-mode fiber links for remote I/O expansion.

Key Features

  • TMR fiber communication link for remote I/O racks in safety systems
  • Multi-mode ST fiber interface for long-distance isolation between main and remote racks
  • Comprehensive front-panel LED diagnostics for link, module health and fault status
  • Built-in continuous self-testing and fault detection for communication paths
  • Preserves full Tricon safety integrity across the fiber remote link
  • Hot-swappable within the RXM chassis for online maintenance
  • Isolated fiber transmission eliminates ground loop interference in industrial sites

Installation & Test Notes

  1. Power off the remote chassis before inserting or removing the 4201-3 module.
  2. Terminate multi-mode fiber cables to ST connectors; inspect fiber ends for dirt or scratches before connection.
  3. Seat the module securely in the RXM chassis slot and fasten the front retaining screw.
  4. Apply chassis power and observe LED indicators; verify PASS light is steady, check TX/RX activity.
  5. Validate communication between main Tricon controller and remote I/O using TriStation diagnostic software.
  6. Perform link fault simulation test to confirm system correctly triggers FAIL alarm upon fiber breakage.
  7. Maintain proper fiber bend radius to avoid signal attenuation.

Application

Used in oil & gas refineries, chemical plants, power generation and pipeline safety systems. It extends Tricon SIS remote I/O racks where field I/O must be located far away from the main control room cabinet, maintaining SIL3 safety integrity for emergency shutdown (ESD) and fire & gas (F&G) protection.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between 4200-3 and 4201-3? A: 4200-3 is the primary RXM module installed in the main controller rack, while 4201-3 is the matching remote RXM module located at the remote I/O rack end of the fiber link.

Q: Can 4201-3 use single-mode fiber? A: No, 4201-3 is built for multi-mode fiber only. Single-mode variants are 4210-3 /4211-3.

Q: Is this module hot swappable? A: Yes, it supports hot-slot replacement in the RXM chassis without full system shutdown.
