Description
Product Overview
The HYDRAN M2-X manufactured by GE Vernova is the next-generation continuous online dissolved gas analysis (DGA) monitoring transmitter for power transformers. It continuously measures dissolved fault gases and moisture content in transformer insulating oil, to detect early developing faults such as partial discharge, overheating and arcing before catastrophic transformer failure. Two sensor variants are available: composite gas sensor (H₂, CO, C₂H₂, C₂H₄) or discrete hydrogen-only H₂ sensor. It supports mineral oil, natural ester and synthetic ester fluids, widely deployed in power substations, power plants and heavy industrial power systems for transformer asset health management and predictive maintenance.

Key Features
- Continuous online DGA monitoring, detects dissolved fault gases and oil moisture to identify early transformer insulation degradation, overheating and arcing faults.
- Two optional sensor configurations: composite multi-gas or dedicated hydrogen sensor, extended sensor service life and low routine maintenance.
- Built-in capacitive moisture sensor, outputs both %RH and ppm moisture values, critical to evaluate paper insulation aging and gasket leakage.
- Expandable analog input channels to integrate additional sensors for top oil temperature, load current, and calculate winding hot spot temperature using IEEE standard transformer thermal models.
- Multiple alarm strategies: threshold alarms and rate-of-change trending alarms for gas and moisture, with 5 configurable SPDT relay outputs for local alarm or SCADA interlock.
- Rich communication options supporting Modbus, DNP3.0 and optional IEC61850 for seamless integration with substation SCADA, historians and APM asset management platforms.
- Integrated local LCD and keypad for on-site parameter setup, alarm acknowledgement and real-time data viewing; built-in oil sampling port for manual DGA cross-verification.
- Compact enclosure, single valve mounting design, can be installed on most transformers without taking the transformer out of service.
Installation Notes
- Mount HYDRAN M2-X directly onto the transformer’s oil drain valve; verify valve health before installation and avoid oil leakage.
- Separate field signal cables and Ethernet wiring from high-voltage power cables to reduce electromagnetic interference.
- Confirm power supply type (AC or DC) before power-up and verify grounding connection for instrument surge protection.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures when connecting to energized transformer accessories.
- Backup device configuration and historical trend data before sensor replacement or firmware upgrade.
- After commissioning, perform gas calibration check and cross comparison against lab DGA samples to validate measurement accuracy.
- Keep instrument enclosure well ventilated, avoid direct long-term solar radiation exposure.
Testing Procedure
- Visual inspection: Check enclosure, LCD screen, keypad, valve fittings, cable glands and relay terminals for cracks, oil stains and corrosion.
- Mount unit to transformer valve, perform oil tightness leak test.
- Apply power, run built-in power-up self-test, check LCD display and LED status indicators.
- Verify gas and moisture readings, compare with manual lab DGA sample results for calibration validation.
- Configure gas/moisture Hi / HiHi alarm thresholds and test relay alarm output function.
- Validate communication connection to SCADA / Perception software, confirm data trending upload.
- Save configuration file and historical logs, record calibration and commissioning data and tag spare unit for inventory.
