Description
Product Overview
The ABB AI890 is an 8-channel intrinsically safe analog input module belonging to the ABB S800 distributed remote I/O family for System 800xA and Freelance DCS platforms. It accepts 4–20mA / 0–20mA current signals and provides loop power to two-wire field transmitters located in hazardous classified areas. The integrated intrinsic safety circuit eliminates the requirement for separate external IS barriers, simplifying field instrument wiring for oil & gas, chemical and petrochemical plant control systems. It communicates with the DCS controller via ModuleBus and PROFIBUS DP when deployed as remote S800 I/O.

Key Features
- 8 single-ended analog input channels with built-in intrinsic safety protection
- Integrated loop supply power for 2-wire pressure, flow and temperature transmitters
- Single-group galvanic isolation between field side and DCS ModuleBus backplane
- Channel diagnostics for loop open-circuit, short-circuit and signal out-of-range detection
- Hot-swappable module for online replacement with plant safety lockout procedures
- No external IS isolators needed; reduces cabinet component count and wiring complexity
- G3 coating option available for corrosive industrial environments
- Seamless integration with ABB System 800xA and Freelance DCS controllers
- Front panel LED indicators for module health, power and fault status
Application
Used in chemical plants, refineries, offshore platforms and natural gas processing facilities. It reads analog measurement signals from IS-certified field transmitters for pressure, level, temperature and flow, sending process values back to the ABB DCS for control, monitoring and alarming in hazardous Zone 0 / Zone 1 classified locations.
Installation & Maintenance Notes
- ESD protection required during module handling and replacement
- Use TU890 terminal unit for hazardous area wiring; TU891 for non-hazardous applications
- Calculate intrinsic safety parameters (cable capacitance and inductance) for each field loop before commissioning
- Separate IS field wiring from non-IS control and power cables, no mixing in the same cable tray
- Verify 24VDC rack supply before power-up
- Perform loop test and signal calibration after module replacement
- Confirm out-of-range alarm configuration for transmitter fault detection
- Back up DCS I/O configuration before module swap
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between AI890 and AI895? A: AI890 is 8-channel IS analog input without HART; AI895 supports HART communication for smart transmitters.
Q: Does AI890 need an external safety barrier? A: No, intrinsic safety circuits are built into AI890 module, external barriers are not required.
Q: Is AI890 hot swappable? A: Yes, hardware hot-swap is supported, but hazardous field circuits require proper lockout/tagout.
