Description
Product Overview
The Emerson 5X00583G01 is a 16-channel RTD input module built for the Ovation distributed control system. It reads resistance values from RTD temperature sensors and converts them to digital temperature readings for the Ovation controller. It supports 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire RTD connections, commonly deployed for boiler, turbine and balance-of-plant temperature monitoring in power generation and pulp & paper facilities. OEM production has ended; available stock consists of surplus or refurbished tested replacement units for Ovation I/O racks.

Engineer Notes
- This is a fully integrated I/O module; no separate personality card required. Hot-swap can be performed when site lockout/tagout procedures are followed.
- Front panel LEDs indicate module health and per-channel fault states. The module flags open sensor leads, shorted wiring and out-of-range resistance values. Broken RTD wiring is the most common field fault.
- 3-wire or 4-wire wiring is recommended to reduce lead resistance error. 2-wire RTD connections introduce higher measurement uncertainty for long cable runs.
- Use shielded twisted pair cable for all RTD wiring. Separate sensor cables from high-current AC power cables to reduce induced noise and measurement drift.
- The module supplies small excitation current to each RTD. No external excitation supply is required.
- Apply ESD controls while handling. De-energize rack power before module removal or insertion if hot swap is not approved. After replacement, configure RTD type and wiring mode in the Ovation point database, then calibrate each channel.
Pre-Shipment Test Protocol
- Visual inspection: Check PCB, edge connector, front panel LEDs and housing for bent pins, corrosion or component damage.
- Continuity and isolation test: Verify 1000VDC isolation between field RTD circuits and backplane logic.
- Functional bench test: Connect precision resistance decade box to each channel, inject resistance values corresponding to low, mid and high temperature points, confirm module temperature readings match reference values.
- Fault simulation: Simulate open sensor and shorted input on each channel, confirm module logs diagnostic alarms.
- Power cycling: Cycle backplane power 10 times, confirm channel readings remain stable after each restart.
- Save test logs and photos for QA records.
Buyer FAQ
Q: Can I swap 5X00583G01 directly with older Ovation RTD modules? A: Physical form factor fits the same rack slot. Confirm controller firmware and point database configuration. Verify RTD type and wire mode definitions before cutover.
Q: Does this module support thermocouple inputs? A: No. It is designed exclusively for RTD resistance temperature sensors. Select Ovation thermocouple modules for mV thermocouple signals.
Q: Is this new original Emerson factory stock? A: OEM production has stopped. Available units are surplus or fully refurbished tested stock. We offer a 12-month warranty on tested units.
Q: Are terminal blocks included? A: Terminal blocks are not included unless explicitly noted on your quote. Confirm terminal assembly availability at order placement.
