Description
Product Overview
The Emerson 1C31204G01 is a remote node personality module built for the Ovation distributed control system. It pairs with the remote I/O node base hardware to handle fiber optic communications between the main MAU (Media Attachment Unit) and field remote I/O racks. It translates backplane I/O data for transmission over multimode fiber, manages node addressing, and reports diagnostic alarms back to the Ovation controller. OEM production has ended; available stock consists of surplus or refurbished tested replacement units for power generation, pulp and paper, and large process plants with distributed remote I/O architecture.

Engineer Notes
- This personality module cannot run standalone. It must be installed on the matching remote node base board. Confirm base part number before ordering.
- Front panel LEDs indicate power, fiber link status, bus activity and fault conditions. Common field issues include contaminated fiber end faces, bent fiber cables, incorrect node address setting, and backplane contact degradation.
- Each remote node requires unique address configuration. Duplicate node addresses on the fiber ring will bring down the entire remote I/O network.
- Use shielded twisted pair wiring for local field I/O on the remote rack. Separate low-level signal cables from high-power wiring to reduce noise interference.
- Follow ESD protocols during handling. De-energize remote node rack power before removing or inserting the module. After replacement, verify fiber attenuation and node communication in Ovation diagnostic tools.
- This personality works with MAU hardware such as 1C31179G01 at the main controller rack. Confirm MAU personality and fiber type match end-to-end before commissioning.
Pre-Shipment Test Protocol
- Visual inspection: Check PCB traces, edge connector, front panel and LED windows for corrosion, bent pins or component damage.
- Continuity and isolation test: Verify isolation between fiber transceiver circuit and remote node I/O backplane.
- Functional bench test: Install onto matching remote node base, connect multimode fiber to MAU simulator, confirm link lock and stable I/O data exchange.
- Fault simulation: Disconnect fiber, simulate node address conflict, confirm module triggers correct diagnostic alarms.
- Power cycling: Cycle 24VDC backplane power 10 times, confirm fiber link and node communication restore automatically after each restart.
- Save test logs and photos for QA records.
Buyer FAQ
Q: Can I swap 1C31204G01 with other Ovation remote node personality modules directly? A: Physical form factor fits the same remote node slot. Validate MAU compatibility, node addressing and Ovation controller firmware before cutover.
Q: What fiber cable does this module require? A: 850nm multimode fiber, maximum 2km link length. Single-mode fiber will not operate with this hardware. Inspect and clean fiber connectors during installation.
Q: Is this new original Emerson factory stock? A: OEM production has stopped. Available units are surplus or fully refurbished tested stock. We offer a 12-month warranty on tested units.
Q: Does this personality module include fiber jumpers and terminal blocks? A: Fiber patch cords and I/O terminal blocks are not included unless stated on your quote. Confirm bundle components at order placement.
