Description
Product Overview
The Emerson 1C31166G02 is an EMOD serial link controller built for Ovation DCS R1120 CPU racks. It handles RS-485 serial communications between the Ovation controller and external serial field devices, third-party PLCs, and remote I/O nodes. It manages message framing, bus arbitration and diagnostic reporting to maintain stable serial data exchange for power generation and large process control sites. OEM production has ended; available stock consists of surplus or refurbished tested replacement units.

Engineer Notes
- This EMOD must install in the dedicated EMOD slot paired with an R1120 CPU. It cannot operate standalone or with other Ovation CPU generations.
- Front panel LEDs show module power, link activity, transmit/receive traffic and communication fault status. Common field issues include incorrect baud rate, mismatched parity, missing bus termination, and ground loop noise.
- Use shielded twisted pair RS-485 cable for field serial runs. Install 120Ω termination resistor at the physical endpoints of the bus only. Do not add multiple termination points.
- ESD controls required during handling. Power down the rack before removing or inserting the module. After replacement, match serial parameters in Ovation point database to the connected slave device settings.
- Hot swap is supported only when site safety procedures allow. Verify bus state before pulling the module to avoid communication disruption.
Pre-Shipment Test Protocol
- Visual inspection: Check PCB assembly, edge connector, front panel and LED windows for bent pins, corrosion or component damage.
- Continuity and isolation test: Verify isolation between RS-485 serial circuit and backplane bus.
- Functional bench test: Connect to RS-485 test slave device, configure multiple baud rates and parity settings, confirm stable read/write data transfer.
- Fault simulation: Disconnect serial wiring and inject bus noise, confirm module logs communication timeout alarms.
- Power cycling: Cycle 24VDC backplane power 10 times, confirm serial link automatically re-establishes after each restart.
- Save test logs and photos for QA records.
Buyer FAQ
Q: Can 1C31166G02 replace 1C31166G01 directly? A: Form factor is identical, but confirm R1120 CPU firmware revision. Review serial database configuration before cutover. Minor register differences may require parameter tuning.
Q: What devices can this serial link controller connect to? A: RS-485 based serial slaves including remote I/O, motor protection relays, third-party PLCs and transmitters using supported Ovation serial driver protocols. It is not for Ethernet communication.
Q: Is this new original Emerson factory stock? A: OEM production has stopped. Available units are surplus or fully refurbished tested stock. We offer a 12-month warranty on tested units.
