Description
Product Overview
The Emerson 5X00584G01 is a 16-channel thermocouple input module for the Ovation distributed control system. It reads millivolt signals from thermocouple sensors and converts raw mV readings into temperature values for the Ovation controller. Multiple thermocouple types are selectable on a per-channel basis. This card is used for high-temperature monitoring on boilers, furnaces, turbine exhaust and high-temperature process lines in power generation and pulp & paper plants. OEM production has ended; available stock consists of surplus or refurbished tested replacement units for Ovation I/O racks.

Engineer Notes
- This is a fully integrated I/O module; no separate personality card required. Hot-swap can be performed when site lockout/tagout procedures are followed.
- Front panel LEDs indicate module health and per-channel fault states. The module flags open thermocouple wires, shorted sensor pairs and out-of-range mV signals. Broken thermocouple wiring is the most common field fault.
- Built-in cold junction compensation compensates for temperature at the module terminal block. Keep the rack cabinet temperature stable to minimize CJC measurement drift.
- Use shielded thermocouple extension wire matched to the sensor type. Separate TC cables from high-current AC power cables to reduce induced electrical noise. Do not run thermocouple wiring alongside high voltage cables.
- The module does not supply external excitation power; thermocouples generate millivolt signal passively.
- Apply ESD controls while handling. De-energize rack power before module removal or insertion if hot swap is not approved. After replacement, select correct thermocouple type in the Ovation point database and validate channel readings.
Pre-Shipment Test Protocol
- Visual inspection: Check PCB, edge connector, front panel LEDs and housing for bent pins, corrosion or component damage.
- Continuity and isolation test: Verify 1000VDC isolation between field thermocouple circuits and backplane logic.
- Functional bench test: Connect precision mV signal source to each channel, inject millivolt values corresponding to low, mid and high temperature points for multiple TC types, confirm module temperature readings match reference values.
- Fault simulation: Simulate open sensor and shorted input on each channel, confirm module logs diagnostic alarms.
- Power cycling: Cycle backplane power 10 times, confirm channel readings remain stable after each restart.
- Save test logs and photos for QA records.
Buyer FAQ
Q: Can I swap 5X00584G01 directly with 5X00583G01 RTD module? A: Physical form factor fits the same rack slot. 5X00584G01 is designed for thermocouple mV signals, while 5X00583G01 is for RTD resistance sensors. Update point definitions and controller firmware before cutover.
Q: Does this module support both thermocouple and RTD sensors on the same card? A: No. This module only accepts thermocouple millivolt inputs. Use 5X00583G01 for RTD sensors.
Q: Is this new original Emerson factory stock? A: OEM production has stopped. Available units are surplus or fully refurbished tested stock. We offer a 12-month warranty on tested units.
Q: Are terminal blocks included? A: Terminal blocks are not included unless explicitly noted on your quote. Confirm terminal assembly availability at order placement.
