Electronic components degrade over time, but the rate of degradation is heavily influenced by their operating environment. By strictly controlling the environment around your DCS cabinets, you can drastically reduce hardware failure rates.
- Thermal Management: Heat is the enemy of electronics. Ensure control room air conditioning is redundant and functioning optimally. Inside the cabinets, check cooling fans regularly and replace them before they seize. Consider installing localized temperature monitors within critical CPU cabinets.
- Humidity and Corrosion: In chemical plants or coastal facilities, corrosive gases and high humidity can degrade PCB traces and edge connectors. Maintain optimal humidity levels (usually between 40% and 60%) and ensure cabinet doors are properly sealed.
- Power Quality: As power supply units age, their ability to filter out voltage spikes and electrical noise diminishes. “Dirty power” can slowly damage sensitive DCS modules. Regularly test the power quality feeding your control panels and consider upgrading Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and line conditioners.
